Light Caught The Edges

Anthony Childs Was actually thinking how optimistic (relatively speaking) the album felt through the first four tracks but then "Ashen" plays and offered a completely different mind set. The first four tracks seem purposefully of a mood and the last four seem of a different mood (and size, the sounds are bigger/ deeper/wider). Favorite track: Ashen.

Drifting, Almost Falling / Adrift, At Sea I was going to say something along the lines of "We are in the FTMOTS world and we are lucky to be present" but that sounded a little too wanky. However, the truth of the situation is true. Each release these guys do betters the previous one which is incredibly difficult to do as each is stunning. An admirable quality is that they don't appear to be stuck in a niche sound. Each release builds up and expands their sound world. Bravo to FTMOTS and Lost Tribe Sound.

Randy Arnold One of the most stunning albums I've ever heard. Beautiful and meditative. The album is aptly titled, as the music brings forth images of light filtered through fall leaves and reflecting from forest streams. If there was ever a soundtrack for contemplative "shinrin-yoku", this is it. Highest recommendation.

about

Aaron Martin and Dag Rosenqvist return as From the Mouth of the Sun with the much anticipated fourth studio album, 'Light Caught the Edges' (out October 15th, 2021 on Lost Tribe Sound).

NPR's Tom Huizenga said of the pair's 2017 album 'Hymn Binding,' "If From the Mouth of the Sun's mission... is nothing more than beauty itself, they have succeeded on a disproportionate scale." That quote does well to encapsulate Martin and Rosenqvist's main motivations with the project. Does one truly require a lengthy narrative with music as potent and emotive as From the Mouth of the Sun?

Lost Tribe Sound has long-admired From the Mouth of the Sun's ability to remain focused on the music. Despite the duo having a clear vision and a strong understanding of composition, there are no grand statements or overly academic concepts at play. This allows the music to just be what it is, moving, deep, personal. This unadorned approach is refreshing. The music feels like a blank canvas, easily approachable... rooted in the physical... its emotion is tangible.

'Light Caught the Edges' moves in new directions without being a complete sea change from their previous works. Over the last couple of years, From the Mouth of the Sun began introducing synths and experimenting outside of their more familiar acoustic sound sources. Rosenqvist pushed for a stronger sense of forward motion by utilizing a number of well chosen arpeggios and subtle percussive techniques.

The new album also features several guest musicians. Lisen Rylander Löve performs the saxophone on "Breaking Light." Some may recall Lisen's moving sax work on "Come Silence" from Rosenqvist's 2016 solo album, 'Elephant.' Drummer Esben Willems (Monolord) also adds his talents to "Breaking Light." Elsewhere, Jakob Lindhagen delivers a special piano performance on "Landing in the Dark." Coincidentally, Rosenqvist and Lindhagen have just released a collaboration album with the US label Time Released Sound, entitled, 'Stadsbilder,' (Aug. 6th, 2021).

Even with the addition of new players, new tools, and the exploration of new genres, 'Light Caught the Edges' still sounds like a From the Mouth of the Sun album. The warm attentive presence of Martin's string work, like rolling waves ever-folding in on themselves, help to calm the searing edges of Rosenqvist's unpredictable dynamics. It's an alluring push and pull that they have perfected over the course of four albums, an EP, and multiple film scores.

BEST ALBUMS OF 2021 - "The masters of ambient flirt with the sky to make gold with a touch of Constellation-style post-rock" (Riton) INDIE ROCK MAG

2021'S BEST ALBUMS: Nicola Orlandino - SON OF MARKETING

BEST OF 2021 - Music For Walking And Not Crying In The Autumn Rain List - "Their sound is instantly recognizable, as solemn, dynamically wavering melodies drift in between the cello and keys. Rich sonic textures stack up with layers, building up ledges and cliffs from which music leaps onward and soars." - HEADPHONE COMMUTE

ALBUM OF THE WEEK - "The austere warmth of the vibrations of Aaron Martin's strings and Dag Rosenqvist's search for enveloping compositional dynamics are thus dressed, from time to time, with airy and romantic shades, but also with slightly elegiac tones, which more than experimentation they turn to the immediacy of sensations suspended in mid-air" - (translated from Italian) MUSIC WON'T SAVE YOU

"Truly compelling record that stands with the band’s best work while offering delightful and surprising new turns for even their most steadfast longtime listeners." - STATIONARY TRAVELS

"Combining Aaron Martin’s grounded strings with Dag Rosenqvist’s unpredictable tonal shifts and dynamic potency, their music has the ability to both breathe fire & calm the tempest, casting spells of deep beauty and intrigue at every turn." (James Catchpole) FLUID RADIO

"Light Caught the Edges is more than From the Mouth of the Sun’s best record. It is an announcement of sorts. The duo, who in their own careers also have been mighty prolific and well-regarded, has come into their own with the fourth LP, really creating a sense of the group’s space in ambient circles." - (Justin Vellucci) SPECTRUM CULTURE

"Through these grafts, the formula poised between ambient and neoclassicism nourished by the combination of deeply kinematic electroacoustic phrasing finds unexpected openings towards even more dynamic structures." - (translated from Italian) SOWHAT MUSICA

"With its hypnotic atmosphere and beautiful layers, From the Mouth of the Sun released an ambient highlight of the year, proving that Lost Tribe is the place to watch for great ambient music." - EVERYTHING IS NOISE

"While there's always a fair share of darkness in their work, there are some quite hopeful pieces among the latest works. It's as beautiful and patient as ever." - (Peter Hollo) UTILITY FOG

"The music goes through neoclassical narrow paths to unpaved, rough nature areas, always looking for what is beautiful and where they do not lose sight of the route of the compositions. The whole is wonderfully melancholy, manages to move and provides contemplation." - (translated from Dutch) (Jan Willem Broek) DE SUBJECTIVISTEN
